KRKONOŠE MOUNTAINS MUSEUM IN VRCHLABÍ, FOUR HISTORICAL HOUSES

The set of four gabled houses on Vrchlabí's square are some of the oldest examples of vernacular architecture in the Krkonoše Mountains and a precious remnant of the town's original buildings.

There were originally five wooden buildings with arcades here. One of the preserved houses is now home to the Administration of the Krkonoše National Park information centre, while the others contain museum exhibitions displaying a lavish collection of items linked to the flax industry, with some gorgeous painted vernacular furniture from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, and charting the history of the town, its crafts and folk art.

Tribute is also paid to the era of Albrecht von Wallenstein, who owned the Vrchlabí estate from 1624. Back then, Vrchlabí had a large ironworks, formerly famed for making scythes, but Wallenstein turned it into one of the main suppliers of weapons for his troops.
