HRUBÁ SKÁLA CHATEAU

The original castle was evidently founded in the mid-14th century by Albrecht's ancestor Hynek von Wallenstein, who called it Skála – the name deriving from its unusual position on two large high rocks. After Jičín, the castle became the second base for Albrecht von Wallenstein, who liked its unique qualities and made it his main defensive residence. The castle housed the duke's war archive and played host to important acquaintances of Wallenstein.
Hrubá Skála remained in the family's possession until 1821, after which its new owners, the Aehrenthals, converted it into a grand neo-Gothic chateau. All that remains of its history as a stronghold are the Wallenstein cellars and the prison preserved below the chateau.
