VALDŠTEJN CASTLE

Valdštejn Castle, one of the oldest castles in the Bohemian Paradise, was named after the old noble House of Wallenstein. Its name in German translates as "forest stone" or "forest rock" and is still very fitting. The castle lies in the Hrubá Skála rock town, which is always a popular spot with tourists. It was built on sandstone blocks in 1260 by Jaroslav of Hruštice from the House of Markvartice, the predecessor of the Wallensteins. It belonged to the Wallensteins until around 1380.
It returned to the family 250 years later, when it was acquired, as part of the huge Smiřický estate, by the son of Markéta Smiřická, Albrecht Václav Eusebius von Wallenstein.
