RUINS OF TROSKY CASTLE

According to the first written records (1396) of the the iconic castle of Trosky in the Bohemian Paradise, it was built on two volcanic outcrops by one Čeněk of Vartenberk, although it is evident that the castle originated much earlier. Albrecht von Wallenstein acquired Trosky in 1622 as part of the property confiscated from Albrecht Jan Smiřický. The Wallensteins owned the castle, which was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and never used since, until 1821, when they sold it to Johann Lexa von Aehrenthal.

In 1925 the ruins became state property, but two years later the two towers, known as The Crone and The Maiden, were repaired at the instigation of the Czech Tourist Club. Since then, experts have carried out numerous works to secure the rock massif and the remains of the buildings. A staircase was built up to The Crone in 2000. There is nothing like Trosky anywhere else in the world.
