NOVÁ PAKA REGION

The region between the ruins of the castle of Kumburk, Pecka castle and Lázně Bělohrad is famous for finds of precious stones (agates, amethysts, crystals, agates, jaspers and Czech garnets), as well as plant and animal fossils. Many of them can be seen in the Nová Paka Municipal Museum, where you can also visit a unique exhibition on spiritualism, for which the Nová Paka region used to be famous. The history of this region was also shaped by the famous military commander Albrecht von Wallenstein, in whose footsteps you can follow.

The Nová Paka region became part of his Frýdlant duchy in the 1620s, when Albrecht expanded his duchy with the addition of the Kumburk estate, later the Pecka estate and, in 1626, the Bělohrad Renaissance fortress with its court, as well as other villages. In his youth, Albrecht converted to the Catholic faith, which opened up a wealth of unprecedented opportunities that he was ingenious enough to exploit.

The premonition of 1628 envisaged by the famous seer and protégé of Jan Amos Comenius, Kristina Poniatowská, is associated with spiritualism. She arrived in Jičín from Horní Branná, where she was staying with Comenius, to warn Wallenstein of his fate and to urge him to abandon the Catholic faith. On her journey back, Kristina visited the Okrouhlý fortress near Lázně Bělohrad. Around five years after her premonition, Wallenstein was murdered.
