MNICHOVO HRADIŠTĚ

The town of Mnichovo Hradiště was founded in the late 13th century as the vassal town of the Cistercian monks from the nearby Hradiště monastery (hence the name Mnichovo Hradiště). In the early 17th century, Václav Budovec of Budov built a magnificent Renaissance chateau here, which later became the property of Albrecht von Wallenstein.
Mnichovo Hradiště Chateau was rebuilt into the Baroque form we see today from 1679 to 1700 and remained the property of the Wallensteins until 1945. The period Wallenstein interiors contain rare and lavish collections such as Delphi faience, Meissen, Japanese and Chinese porcelain, costumes, weapons, a unique historical theatre with working machinery and a library with some 22,000 volumes, which was previously managed by Giacomo Casanova at Duchcov Chateau. Wallenstein's remains have been laid to rest in St. Anne's Chapel there since the 18th century.
Thanks to its location, the town of Mnichovo Hradiště is considered one of the gateways to the Bohemian Paradise
