TURNOV

The town of Turnov, known as the Heart of the Bohemian Paradise, was founded by the House of Markvartice in the 13th century on the Jizera River. It was formerly famed for cutting and polishing precious stones, making and polishing glass compositions (glass gems) and jewelcrafting. This tradition still continues to this day. Tourists can visit the Garnet Gallery Customer Centre, the Museum of the Bohemian Paradise, Turnov Synagogue, Dlaskův statek farmstead and the House of Nature in Dolánky u Turnova.

During the reign of Duke Albrecht von Wallenstein, the town was an important crossroads of Wallenstein's state within the state. Its high point as a transportation hub was to come with the construction of the shipping canal, by which the duke wanted to link the Jizera and Cidlina rivers. However, this ambitious plan never came to pass and after the duke's violent death the town was plundered by troops of the Saxon, Swedish and Imperial armies.
