LOMNICE NAD POPELKOU

Lomnice was probably first owned by the Košíks of Lomnice, although we don't know much about them. The Wallensteins are first listed as the owners of the Lomnice estate in the early 14th century, and although they sold it at the end of the century, they regained it in 1524 thanks to Wilhelm Štěpanický von Wallenstein. In 1566-1567 Wilhelm's son Václav rebuilt the Gothic fortress into a Renaissance-style chateau.

Václav von Wallenstein and his wife Eliška of Martinice also did a great deal to develop the town, which by then had become a centre of trade and crafts. Eliška of Martinice, together with the burghers of Lomnice, donated the Lomnice Gradual (hymn book), a lavishly illuminated manuscript that is an important piece of Czech literary heritage. During the Thirty Years' War, the Lomnice state was owned by the sisters Apolena and Eliška von Wallenstein, but their relative Albrecht von Wallenstein compelled them to transfer it to him. In 1654, Jan Viktorín von Wallenstein sold the estate with the town of Lomnice to Pavel Count of Morzin, thus bringing the definitive end to the Wallenstein era in Lomnice. In 1730-1737, Pavel's grandson Václav Count of Morzin had the Renaissance chateau rebuilt in the Baroque style we see today. During the year the chateau, a cultural heritage site, plays host to cultural and social events, exhibitions and occasional tours, especially in summer.

You can find out more about the monuments related to the Wallensteins' era in the town by visiting the Municipal Museum, which you'll find in the largest building on the square in Lomnice.
