HRUBÝ ROHOZEC CHATEAU

The chateau was probably founded by Havel of the House of Markvartice, who had a castle built on a rock above the Jizera River near Turnov after 1300.

In the early 16th century, Konrád Krajíř von Krajek converted the castle into a Late Gothic residence. From the mid-16th century Hrubý Rohozec belonged to the Vartenberks, who rebuilt it as a chateau after the year 1600. After the Battle of White Mountain the Vartenberks' assets were confiscated, and so Hrubý Rohozec was bought by the famous Albrecht von Wallenstein in 1623. However, he didn't own it for long, as in 1628 he sold it and the neighbouring estate to Mikuláš Desfours, whose descendants used the chateau until it was confiscated in 1945.
