HORNÍ BRANNÁ

The village of Horní Branná in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains belonged to the Wallensteins from 1387 as part of the Štěpanice estate, although Albrecht von Wallenstein eventually gifted it to his brother-in-law, Otto Bedřich Harrach, thus beginning the Harrachs' rise to prominence in the Krkonoše Mountains.
The village's chateau became famous as the scene of a prophecy by Kristina Poniatowská, who here, in the presence of John Amos Comenius, predicted Wallenstein's tragic end, after which a message was sent from Branná to Jičín to warn Wallenstein. The chateau now houses the local museum, where you can learn more about this incident, as well as the entire history of the village. The history and ethnography exhibition is located in the beautiful ground-floor rooms of this Renaissance chateau and charts the establishment of the villages of Horní Branná and Valteřice during the colonisation of the border forests, their development, and the life of their inhabitants up to the present day. The exhibition is not open every day and tours need to be booked by calling the number below.
