GRABŠTEJN CASTLE

Grabštejn Castle, rising up on a rocky hill above the village of Chotyně near Hrádek nad Nisou, is first mentioned in a deed from 1286. The conversion of the Gothic castle into a Renaissance residence included the construction of St. Barbora's Chapel, decorated by the finest and most extensive paintings to be found far and wide.
The castle was opened up to the public in 1943 by the last owners, the Clam-Gallases, but after the war it was occupied by the army and gradually fell into disrepair. Extensive renovation work began after 1990, and the castle is once again open to visitors.
The castle's most famous owner was probably Albrecht von Wallenstein, who held it for a time after 1622.
