DOKSY CHATEAU

Jan von Vartenberk had Doksy Chateau built at the end of the 16th century. After his death, the chateau passed to the Berkas of Dubá. After the Battle of White Mountain, Duke Albrecht von Wallenstein acquired the Berkas' extensive holdings for literally a pittance. After Albrecht's assassination in February 1634, the huge Wallenstein estate was divided up among his murderers, with the Doksy region going to the Irish colonel Walter Butler. In 1680 the Doksy estate with the chateau was purchased by Arnošt Josef Count of Wallenstein and it remained in the possession of the Wallensteins until 1945.

During World War II some parts of the chateau were used by the SS to accommodate the families of influential officials from Berlin. Following the issue of the Beneš decrees, the Wallenstein estate was confiscated in July 1945. The Czechoslovak state took possession of the chateau. In the 1950s, it housed the Scientific Research Tank Polygon, then a secondary vocational school from 1963 to 2012, and later an agricultural college with a boarding school.

In the spring of 2015 the Liberec Region transferred ownership of the chateau to the town of Doksy, free of charge. The renovated chateau was opened to the public in December 2019 and in June 2020 a tour circuit was opened, devoted to the Wallensteins.
