CHEB

Cheb is one of the oldest towns in the Czech Republic and is very popular with tourists. Its unique buildings and architecture led to it being declared an urban monument reservation in 1981. The symbol of the town is the famous group of eleven houses known as Špalíček. Cheb Castle with the Black Tower and the two-storey Romanesque-Gothic chapel is one of the most beautiful Romanesque heritage sites in Central Europe. One wholly unique sight is the set of historical rafters of the town houses on the square, which visitors can admire on the "Under the Cheb Roofs Tour". The history of the town is charted in a lavish exhibition at the Cheb Museum, while art lovers can visit one of the town's galleries. A pleasant summer holiday can also be spent not far away from Cheb, by the Jesenice and Skalka reservoirs.

The death of Albrecht von Wallenstein

On 25 February 1634 the town of Cheb witnessed the assassination of Duke Albrecht von Wallenstein, who had taken refuge there as a supposed safe haven. However, a large group of dragoons and musketeers, led by Robert Geraldine, Walter Deveroux and Dionysius MacDaniel, overpowered the guards at the Pachelbel House on Cheb square, where the duke was staying, and burst inside. The duke was stabbed to death after a short skirmish.

Albrecht von Wallenstein was assassinated at the emperor's behest. The order was based on unsubstantiated accusations that Wallenstein was planning a rebellion, in an attempt to seize power and slaughter the imperial family. No evidence for these allegations was ever found. However, the emperor did manage to rid himself of an inconvenient creditor
